British rail operator South Western Railway (SWR) has installed air purifying columns at one of its stations as part of a pilot program to create a healthier environment for passengers and staff.
The column was developed by clean air technology company Pluvo and is installed on platform 4 at Salisbury Station.
We use advanced air filtration technology to monitor and remove harmful pollutants from the air, creating a cleaner and healthier environment for our customers.
The column includes a three-stage filtration process that removes harmful airborne particulate matter, target gases, and viruses, often referred to as PM2.5.
It also has a built-in air quality monitoring system that provides data-driven insights.
Additionally, it can display travel and air quality information and give passengers the opportunity to record their thoughts on the initiative through a text-based chat feature.
Dan Pinner, Southwestern Railway’s senior design and innovation manager, said in an interview that the company’s sustainability team has identified a number of air quality hotspots, including Salisbury Station.
Mr Piner said air quality was an issue at the station due to the large number of diesel engines passing through Salisbury and potentially staying on the platform for several minutes at a time.
He added that Salisbury’s availability of nearby parking and the train depot next door were also factors.
Piner said Southwestern Railway considered a variety of air quality technologies, but Purbo’s columns stood out because the Salisbury platform is so wide and could accommodate such a large structure. Told.
Piner added that if the six-month trial is successful, more Pluvo columns will be added at additional stations as part of the company’s commitment to improving the travel experience for all customers.
“I was at Salisbury station last week and spoke to some customers about this,” he added.
“They were very interested in the content of the column. Some of the staff members who were on stage also asked questions and were interested. So far, we’ve gotten positive feedback. We look forward to continued feedback.”
The partnership with Pluvo is just one way SWR is improving every step of the customer journey.
Over the past five years, the company has also installed more than 4,000 bike spaces across its vast network, allowing customers to travel by rail to their destination and then continue their journey by renting a bike or scooter. This promotes sustainable tourism.
The company is also the first rail operator to publish a roadmap to net zero and have carbon emissions reduction targets recognized by the Science-Based Targets Initiative, a global climate organization.
“There are other initiatives that our sustainability team is working on,” Pinner added. “This is not a separate project, but part of a larger approach.”
Pluvo chief executive Matteo Maccario said in a statement that the company is pleased to be working with South Western Railway. to improve air quality at one of the region’s busiest stations.
“Air pollution is the biggest environmental threat to global health, and Pluvo columns are a solution that can help create healthier and safer spaces for all of us,” Maccario added.
