To Nathan Bake’s neighbors in Runcorn, he was a lone, technically savvy mechanic who kept to himself. But to the online pedophile cronies, he was the chief moderator of The Annex, a disgusting dark website dedicated to extreme child abuse.
The website was accessible through TOR software and was run by a man from Alabama, USA. The site had approximately 90,000 users around the world and shared extremist content, including “Heartcore,” which involved abuse and violence against infants and young children.
Mr Bake, 28, was one of three hosts on UK-based The Annex. He was second-in-command and was responsible for managing approximately 30 members of his staff, working with them to enforce site rules and ensure smooth operations. Chester Crown Court heard this week how the site was first identified by American law enforcement officers on a server in Romania in 2020 and then moved to a server in Moldova.

The “sophisticated and well-structured” operation included a “gateway” to access the site. This was used to “gain the trust” of site administrators before new users were promoted to other areas with names such as “Tots ‘R’ Us” and “No Limits.” “Nothing was off-limits here. Everything was encouraged,” National Crime Agency (NCA) chief Adam Priestley told a press conference this week.
Beik, who goes by the username Pink, answered questions from other site users and offered advice on how to evade law enforcement attention. In one offensive post, Bake told a user: “Guys, show me what you have for happy hour. Show me the boys and girls that turn you on the most.”
The site’s moderators, including Kabir Garg, a psychiatrist from Lewisham, south-east London, who was jailed for six years last year, take turns in holding staff meetings. Staff were not paid. Mr Priestley told reporters: “The men we’re talking about here should be part of a team that provides a platform and promotes a community of pedophiles who encourage child abuse – in any company. He was part of the staff.” Children around the world. ”
Since April 2019, the site has had 1.9 million posts and 9.6 million different files shared, according to the NCA. Mr Priestley said users of the site feel a degree of safety because of the anonymity provided. Bake worked as a mechanic in Runcorn. Mark Edmondson, the NCA’s lead officer on the case, said: “He seems to be quite a solitary person. He worked during the day and then spent the night, spending almost all his time… coming home from work. Arresting officers said he was “dedicated and proactive” to Annex. He was active on this site for about two and a half years. Investigators found that in just 10 weeks, it had been posted more than 600 times, including 156 URLs that directed users to child sexual abuse content.
Beik’s home was searched in November 2022. At the time, Beik had been the lead host of “The Annex” for about seven months. Investigators seized chat logs showing regular communications with those responsible across the site. Mr Bake is said to be “technically savvy” and police found a large amount of equipment when they searched his home.
During sentencing at Chester Crown Court, the court heard more than 3.6 million indecent images were recovered from around dozens of devices including laptops, phones, USBs and external hard drives. One laptop was running and using the TOR dark web browser, with lewd images of children displayed on the screen.

In November 2023, Beik was charged with participating in an organized crime group, three counts of aiding and abetting the sexual exploitation of children, two counts of distributing indecent images of children, three counts of creating indecent images of children, and possession of a pedophile’s manual. The NCA has revealed that this is the first time it has applied the charge of membership in an organized crime group in a case of this type. Bake, of Harrow Drive, Runcorn, was jailed for 16 years at Chester Crown Court on Wednesday (February 14), placed on the sex offenders’ register for life and given a lifetime sexual harm prevention order. A further 14 people were indicted in the United States for helping run the Annex, and eight were sentenced to prison terms ranging from six to 28 years. A third British man, from Eastbourne, Sussex, will be sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on Monday, February 19, for his role in The Annex.
