SK Telecom and Intel develop an inline service mesh powered by Intel Xeon processors with built-in AI
South Korean telecommunications company SK Telecom announced that it has collaborated with Intel to successfully develop technology to reduce communication delays required for the evolution of 6G core architecture.
The Asian carrier explained in a release that the core network is the gateway through which all voice and data traffic generated from a customer’s mobile device passes to access the internet network, and the mobile operator responsible for security. Improving the quality of service through interconnection of various systems, including communication service systems.
SK Telecom also said that the 6G core architecture requires greater flexibility and security than previous generations of communications, and is required to incorporate intelligent and automation technologies to provide customers with stable AI service quality and technology. He pointed out that it would be possible.
“As the complexity of the network increases, the process of sending and receiving messages is frequently re-created. Therefore, the communication delay increases compared to the past. “Communication standard technologies for connectivity have difficulty addressing these limitations.”
According to the company, inline service mesh, a technology developed by both companies using Intel Xeon processors with built-in AI, increases communication speeds within the core network by reducing latency between unit functions without proxies. It is said that it is possible.
This technology development will allow computationally intensive AI to be applied to core networks in a broader range of models. SK Telecom has already commercialized technology that reduces wireless resources by 40% and improves connectivity by analyzing real-time movement patterns of users. Through this partnership, the two companies claim that by applying the 6G core architecture, communication delays in the core network will be reduced by 70% and service efficiency will be improved by 33%.
The South Korean telecommunications company said it aims to apply the research results to commercial equipment next year. The news agency said a technology white paper has been published explaining the technology, development process and benefits.
Based on the results of this research, SK Telecom and Intel plan to continue research and development of traffic processing improvement technology that incorporates AI technology in various areas of the core network.
“To ensure our leadership in the 6G field, we have achieved new technological achievements through continuous technology development cooperation with Intel,” said Yu Takki, vice president and head of infrastructure technology at SK Telecom. “We will continue our research and work toward commercialization of our AI-based 6G core architecture.”
Dan Rodriguez, corporate vice president, Intel Network & Edge Solutions Group, said: “Our research and development efforts with SK Telecom continue to deliver innovations that are being deployed by communications service providers around the world.” “By leveraging the latest Intel Xeon processors with built-in AI capabilities, our can drive improvements in both performance and efficiency that will be essential for future core networks.
SK Telecom had previously published a 6G white paper that focused on the key requirements of 6G standardization and the telco’s views on the direction of future network evolution.
The Korean carrier said the new white paper includes views on the main requirements of 6G and 6G evolution methodology, along with opinions on the latest trends in frequency standardization. The 6G whitepaper also provides analysis, development directions, and methodologies for promising 6G use cases, technology trends, and candidate frequencies.
