BILLERICA, Mass. — The Shawsheen Valley Technical High School wrestling team finished the season undefeated for the first time in Billerica school history.
The Rams, who have the largest roster in the state with 53 players, won 26-0.
“It’s something we’ve been looking at all year, but we didn’t want to look at it too close because that would create a jinx for ourselves,” said Brian Tyldesley, one of the Rams’ coaches. “But when it finally happened, more than anything for the kids, it was like a shot through the roof and they were so happy.”
Among the teammates who guided Lamb’s successful season were four sets of brothers.
Junior Sid Tyldesley is one of those eight wrestlers and is just 13 months older than his brother James. But all of his teammates feel like family, he said.
“We’ve been together since we were eight years old and we’ve been wrestling all the time,” Sid said. “So the work is distributed among people. And that means we’re all brothers on this team…We’re always rooting for each other.”
After an unprecedented season, seven of our wrestlers qualified for the Division 1 state tournament.
On Friday, shortly after Sid won his first match at Newton South High School, his younger brother James nailed his opponent in 18 seconds.
Coach Tyldesley says the team’s success is down to their dedication, work ethic and support for each other, but he takes inspiration from former coach Mark Donovan, who passed away from cancer two years ago last October. Told.
“His program was one in a million, and what we’ve done is kind of continued his legacy,” Brian Tyldesley said. “He was never undefeated. So he would have been very proud.”
