Search engine giant Google once offered employees who planned to move to Perplexity AI a 300% pay increase.
Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, revealed this instance on the Big Technology Podcast. Mr. Srinivas, an IIT Madras alumnus, is willing to go to great lengths to help big tech companies retain their employees.

Mr. Srinivas said the employees who received significant pay increases were part of a “search team” and were not directly involved in the AI department.
Srinivas also spoke about job cuts in the technology industry. He said companies target highly paid people who don’t contribute proportionately to productivity.
Tech layoffs in 2024:
Layoffs took place in the first months of 2024, with tens of thousands of people losing their jobs and 32,000 roles cut in the technology industry alone.
Last month, Google CEO Sundar Pichai warned employees to prepare for further layoffs. He said the company needed to make “tough choices” to create investment capacity.

“We have ambitious goals and will invest in big priorities this year,” Pichai said in an internal memo to all Google employees. “The reality is that we have to make tough choices to create this investment capacity,” he said.
Since January 10th, Google has laid off more than 1,000 employees across various departments.

Pichai announced plans to cut about 12,000 jobs, or about 6% of the global workforce, in 2023. “We have some news that is difficult to share.
