A mix of alternative rock, shoegaze, and power pop. wynonna bleach are a five-piece from Belfast, Periwinkle. His new single “SWIM IN THE BAY” is now on sale. We bring you an exclusive interview with the band.
Formed in January 2018, wynonna bleach The band started with a 12-day Russian headline tour under the former name R51. Prior to this, they performed on stage for BBC Introducing at the Reading and Leeds festivals, supporting Feeder and playing a sold-out show at the Ulster Hall alongside Therapy on the anniversary of the BBC’s Introducing music show broadcast in Northern Ireland. What is the origin of the band name?
Curls: Winona Ryder, Bleach (a type of hair), and a love of Bleach (Nirvana album)
I’m so glad you’re all from Belfast. It’s a wonderful city. Please tell us about the music scene there.
Melissa: Oh, there’s so much talent in Belfast! It’s a small place and we all know each other to some degree, but the scene is becoming more diverse and it’s great to see that. Belfast’s Oh Yeah Center is integral to the scene here. There is an ever-evolving music exhibition hall, rehearsal room and recording studio. They run a talent development program and are open as a live venue most days. Their work is so important and their support for emerging artists is massive.
TTell us about the city in general – where would you recommend going?
James: Belfast is a great city with so much to do. Considering how small the city is, there’s a lot of great music and bands coming from here. Be sure to visit the location where the show is being held.
What was the inspiration for your new single “Swim In the Bay”? What is the track about?
Johnny: This is a sarcastic track about bowing your head. As a wise publicist would say, it’s an “aural delight.”
What bands/artists have influenced you personally and as a band?
Carl: Our influences are pretty mixed: Joy Formidable, Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo, Genesis, BeBadobee!

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Melissa: It was so great to be on tour with Alice in Chains, and we did a five-day tour with Alice in Chains.
Ash reached its climax with a performance at Ulster Hall Belfast!
What other projects do you have coming up?
Johnny: We are starting work on our second album this spring with our amazing producers Andy Bradfield and Avril Mackintosh. They’ve worked with Björk, The XX, Rufus Wainwright, and my particular favorite is “When 2 Become 1” by the Spice Girls.
Where will the band be in 10 years?
James I hope I can make a living making music before my arthritis sets in!
Tell us what we should know about you.
Carl: We have a dedicated bowling team.Johnny: Yeah, I’m also going to have shirts made for the bowling team.
