It didn’t take that long Vincent René-Lorty Earned his first Oscar nomination. The Canadian writer and director’s first feature film, Invincible, has been nominated for Best Live-Action Short Film at the 96th Academy Awards. A video posted on YouTube shows René-Lorti and his team reacting to the nomination announcement. In an exclusive video interview with Gold Derby (see above), René-Lorti recalls his fun moments. “I’m not going to lie. First of all, I don’t think we really expected it,” he says. “We cried and screamed and jumped into each other’s arms. That video was probably 15 minutes long. He cut it down to about 30 seconds.”
“Invincible” follows the mark (Leoquim Beaubier-Lepine), a troubled teen whose short temper and impulsive behavior landed him in a juvenile detention center. Based on the experiences of a young man René-Lorti knew, the film transports viewers into Marc’s mind and surroundings, revealing the complex issues surrounding mental health and its treatment.
Because the film is based on a character from René-Lorti’s own past, the director had to struggle to balance his own emotions with his responsibilities as a filmmaker. “I had to work on this movie for almost five or six years, so if I had been emotionally involved in this movie, it would have been a very difficult five or six years,” he explains. It was after this film was screened that René-Lorti began to express his emotions. “When we first showed the film in front of his family and friends, the emotion and sadness came flooding back,” he says. “From that point on, it became a beautiful journey showing it all over the world. During that time, I went through various emotional stages and felt like I might finally understand my friend a little more.”
René-Lorti says attending the Oscars is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. “I used to watch the Oscars almost every year, but it became like a distant dream,” he said of both the event itself and the filmmakers who inspired him. “Just the idea of going there, even though it’s been a childhood dream of mine, is a bit scary.” But Rene-Lorti says she’s doing her best to experience things from a healthy perspective. says. “I want to have fun. I want to have fun,” he says. “I think this itself is a little bit stressful as well, but I don’t want to put too much weight on my shoulders. I just want to have fun and see how this goes.”
