This walk-and-talk interview quickly became a staple of weekend golf broadcasts on NBC and CBS.
It was Matt Wallace’s turn on Saturday, and well, things didn’t go as planned.
Wallace, co-leading after 36 holes, was 11 under through 13 holes and eight shots behind Mexican Open leader Jake Knapp when he put on his earphones and started talking to NBC’s Dan Hicks and Brad Faxon. At that moment, Wallace, who has tended to get hot on the course in the past, might have thrown his earphones in the water. But he didn’t. Instead, he chose to continue the interview.
“What were you trying to do and what couldn’t you do?” Hicks asked.
“I thought enough lies were enough,” Wallace said. “I knew it was going to be a little bit tingly. It was a perfect right-handed 3-wood. I really wasn’t expecting something that spinny and something that cute. And yeah. And it’s just – oh, I just got a fly in my eye. Everything is going to be fine on this hole, which is great. Yes, it’s not going to go my way today.”
Later, after Wallace’s favorite Premier League club, Manchester United, lost 2-1 to Fulham, the team that Wallace’s caddy loves, Hicks gave Wallace a bit of a rib, and Wallace was quoted as saying: He explained what was going through his mind after that shot.
“This is all part of it, right?” Wallace said. “I need to deal with this. I need to get stronger. I need to play better golf and embrace it. Let’s take this up and down and here we go again. There’s nothing I can do except what I’m going to do now.” I can’t do it, it just doesn’t go my way.”
