The Washington Commanders continue their search to fill their head coaching vacancy, seeking second interviews with several coaches still in the playoffs.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the managers are Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike McDonald and assistant coach/defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, and Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator. The company is seeking an additional interview with Ben Johnson. Schefter said Washington also scheduled a second interview with Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
The only teams still searching for their next head coach are the Commanders and Seattle Seahawks. Washington has already met with Weaver, McDonald, Johnson, Glenn, Quinn and Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. The Seahawks also interviewed Johnson, Quinn and Slowik.
The coaches are looking for a replacement for Ron Rivera, who was fired after a 4-13 season. With the Lions and Ravens playing this weekend, Washington will have to wait at least another day to meet with the selected coach.
The Lions will face the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship on Sunday for a chance to reach a championship for the first time in the Super Bowl era. The Ravens will face the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship on Sunday.
Schefter noted that among the candidates, Johnson is listed as the “presumptive favorite” to arrive in Washington, but multiple sources disputed that claim.
Schefter said the Seahawks have not yet met with McDonald and likely won’t be able to do so even if the Ravens advance to the Super Bowl. However, whether or not the Lions are in the Super Bowl, Johnson could still be interviewed a second time due to NFL rules that allow teams to interview coaches who have already conducted the first interview. is.
With all but two head coaching vacancies filled, the pressure is starting to mount for the Commanders and Seahawks to fill the open positions.
