After being fired by the Washington Commanders this offseason, former head coach Ron Rivera is looking for other job opportunities.
around Jonathan Jones CBS’ Rivera met with the Los Angeles Rams over the weekend for the vacant defensive coordinator position. It was also previously reported that the Dallas Cowboys would be interested in Rivera if defensive coordinator Dan Quinn leaves for a head coaching position.
Rivera is also interviewing as the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, so it looks like he will be returning to his roots.
Before becoming the head coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2011, Rivera worked as a defensive assistant with several teams and was the defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears (2004-2006) and Los Angeles Chargers (2008-10). I was excited. In 2010, his last year as defensive coordinator, the Chargers led the league in total defense.
Rivera took over as head coach of the Commanders in 2020 after coaching the Panthers for nine years. Unfortunately, his time in Washington wasn’t very successful, as it was the team’s only playoff appearance in his first year on the job. The Commanders finished last in the NFC East this season with 4 wins and 13 losses.
The Rams entered the market for a new defensive coordinator last week when Raheem Morris left to become head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Los Angeles’ defense was a middling unit this season, allowing 337.9 yards and 22.2 points per game.
It’s clear that Rivera is still highly regarded defensively, so if the Rams want to improve next season, they would be wise to consider adding him to their coaching staff.
