The Philadelphia Eagles have reportedly asked Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to interview for the opening season. NFL Insider Tom Pelissero.
Moore, 35, had previously received interest from the Eagles. There was talk in 2020 that they liked him as an OC candidate. They then met with Nick Sirianni to become head coach in 2021 before ultimately hiring him.
Here's what we wrote about Moore a few years ago:
Dallas' offense improved significantly after Moore replaced Scott Linehan as the Cowboys' play-caller. Their offense improved from 24th in DVOA in 2018 to 2nd in 2019. The Cowboys fell to 24th place in 2020, and it's clear Dak Prescott's season-ending injury was a big factor in that setback. Dallas had some success on offense early in the year (32.6 points per game) before Prescott got injured.
Moore, who remained in Dallas, oversaw a Cowboys offense that ranked fourth in DVOA in 2021. However, the Cowboys dropped to No. 14 in 2022, prompting the organization to move on from Moore and give play-calling duties to Mike McCarthy. Although there was some skepticism about Moore's firing, it appears to have worked. The Cowboys moved up to ninth in DVOA, and Dak Prescott had a career year in MVP conversation.
Meanwhile, Moore joined the Bolts as Brandon Staley's offensive play-caller. The 2023 Chargers finished 16th in DVOA, 24th in EPA per play, and 21st in offensive points per game. Justin Herbert, who started 13 games before getting injured, had a passer rating of 93.2… which was the same as his passer rating in 2022.
Moore wasn't the only reason the Chargers were in turmoil last year. Staley was fired for doing something terrible. LA also lost general manager Tom Telesco.
But he wasn't part of the solution for them, and the Chargers seem content to let Jim Harbaugh select a new OC rather than try to keep Moore.
The Cleveland Browns also reportedly requested an interview with Moore. They are also said to be interviewing former Eagles OC Brian Johnson.
