What made you decide to become a judge for People in Retail Awards 2024?
The retail industry is vast, employing over 3 million people in the UK alone. Diversity in Retail has around 50 of the UK’s best-known retailers as members, with a total workforce of 1.2 million. I have seen first-hand the energy and motivation to make this sector a great place to work. heart. The People in Retail Awards specifically support the efforts of individuals and organizations, and I’m delighted to be a part of it.
What role do rewards and recognition, especially through awards like this, play in the retail industry and why do you think they are important?
Our jobs are so busy that we often forget to stop and reflect on our journey and celebrate the great achievements of those working incredibly hard to make a difference for people and their organizations. Every small step and every giant leap is worth celebrating. The rewards and recognition are given on awards night, but it is the culmination of months and years of incredible, ongoing work. When there is an honor, it should attract the attention of others, and for those who have received an award, it is an honor. This is a sign of our appreciation and encouragement to continue such great work. I believe the award provides great inspiration for others to learn something new, excel at their work and continue to make a difference.
Can you share an experience from your career that illustrates the importance of recognizing excellence in your industry?
During my time at Merlin, my team was recognized for the culture change programs we implemented at over 100 attractions around the world. The company has since been named one of the top 10 best employers by the Sunday Times. Ten years later, I still feel immense pride in what we accomplished as a team. At the time, this award put us on the map as a highly attractive employer with people at its heart. Attracting top talent within your organization has become much easier.
How essential are people to the success of a business? Why do you think it’s important to focus on the individual?
Human resources are a business’s most important asset. From new hires to long-time team members, every employee is unique and brings their own personalities and experiences that are reflected in the success of any business. Putting the spotlight on individuals forces the message that one person can and does make a positive difference. When individuals’ efforts are recognized, they and their organizations gain attention. The result is a sense of responsibility and commitment to go the extra mile, create value, and improve performance.
