Bill Belichick was considered one of the top coaching candidates after parting ways with the New England Patriots earlier this month. However, only one team has publicly announced that they have interviewed the legendary coach.
The Atlanta Falcons recently completed their second interview with Belichick. At one point, it looked like the deal was a done deal. However, recent reports have surfaced that Belichick's acquisition to the Falcons has “lost momentum,” and another report suggests the investigation remains “wide open.”
For Devin McCourty, who spent his entire NFL career playing for Belichick, it's surprising that no team has paid more attention to his services.
“Absolutely. I was kind of shocked because only one team was interested. I feel like if you take a step back, the team is probably looking for a young coach.” McCourty said during his appearance. Wednesday on WEEI's “The Greg Hill Show.” “But I just thought it was an opportunity to bring in a guy like Coach Belichick, the greatest of all time. And with Bill and (Jim) Harbaugh coming in for second interviews, it's weird just looking at Atlanta.” I think so. But at that time, other people were still doing the first interviews.”
Since McCourty's interview, Harbaugh has agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Chargers, but McCourty's claims still stand. The three-time Super Bowl champion pointed out that the Tennessee Titans signed Brian Callahan because they interviewed him, liked him and didn't want him to go elsewhere.
Belichick's age (he turns 72 in April) may also be working against him, as is the fact that he may want to dominate the franchise like he did in New England. And despite all of his success, McCourty believes his age may be a factor preventing teams from interviewing perhaps the NFL's greatest coach.
“Yes, but when you look at the hiring process, you don't see many coaches with 35 to 40 years of coaching experience in the head coaching position, other than coaches who have been with the team for a long time. Some of them have been assistants for a long time. Some of them have been coaches. They'll be joining players and staff that they've probably coached longer than they've been alive.” McCourty said on WEEI.. “So I think the NFL is a league that imitates not only the league week-to-week, but even the coaching. Sean McVay gets the job. He goes and wins. Kyle Shanahan goes and wins. So People say, “That's the new thing.''
Indeed, younger coaches are becoming more common with the Patriots as well. Jerod Mayo was officially promoted from New England, becoming the NFL's youngest head coach at age 37. But Belichick, despite being in his 70s, will undoubtedly elevate the franchise.
Now that Harbaugh is off the board, it will be interesting to see if Belichick does more interviews or ends up in Atlanta.
