Even after graduating from school, I worked various jobs. But by my mid-20s, I wanted a career where I thought I could do some good. I have always loved children and spent a week observing a friend of mine who teaches at a local village school. I knew right away that it was the career for me.
I enjoy working with younger children. I like their innocence and trusting attitude. I remembered myself when I was their age and felt I could relate well to them. I also loved teaching the wide range of subjects covered in elementary schools.
I quit my job as a teacher due to paperwork, but Extremely long working hours and constant interference from the government. Initially, I planned to buy a transportation van and work as a handyman for a while, but my girlfriend’s mother suggested I tutor her in math and English. Within a few years, the van was gone and I was teaching 25 students each week.
The camaraderie with my students is what I will miss the most. Enjoy your time with 30 6th grade students. I miss chatting with them during breaks where I could get to know them better. Private tutors are great though.
What surprised me most was how much children can accomplish when parents have high expectations for them. When you create a well-organized, fun classroom and give your students plenty of support and confidence, they will know that you genuinely care about them. Children rarely disappoint or disappoint the teachers they really like. And even those who are far behind can make great progress if they feel safe and valued and are not afraid to make mistakes.
I don’t think education is getting better. It’s not a primary industry anyway. It’s a lottery. There are some great teachers, but there are also a lot of very bad teachers. When I first became interested in primary education in the early ’90s, about one in five of her students did not meet standards in English and math. It’s much the same today.
In good schools with good teachers, children have a good chance of getting into school. In poor schools, disadvantaged children may not receive the help and support they need.
I love the diversity of being a parish administrator. I’ve been doing this job for a year now, and it’s good to work with adults again: contractors, parishioners, undertakers, colleagues in the parish. My priest lets me move things along. Therefore, they often do creative work. In addition to my day-to-day administrative duties, I produce posters, promotional videos, leaflets, and parish magazines.
Bureaucracy feels pretty minimal in our parish. Recent technology has brought about significant changes in how we work more efficiently. We can now communicate, order, create, share, donate and much more online.
I started making church videos after noticing that church attendance was decreasing. This is especially true in many of our local country churches. I wondered whether church videos would be valuable records in the coming years, when many churches may no longer be places of worship. We started it as an experiment in a church in a nearby village, and it was well received. So we went from there. We’ve developed a format that we use for all of our videos, but we’re always looking for improvements. This video was shot using an iPhone fixed to a gimbal, a stabilizing device, and edited using his Lumafusion on an iPad.
Inaccessible locations or large areas can be difficult to successfully photograph. Therefore, I often take videos of small churches and churches that are not obscured by trees. I hate the giant evergreen trees that block these grand buildings. I’m sure the architects and builders who worked so hard to create it will go to their graves.
My favorite rock band, Big Country, used the following section: rising lark At the beginning of a Ralph Vaughan Williams concert. I thought it was suitable for indoor photography. Because the music is calm, it can be combined with uplifting hymns for outdoor shots. Generally, images and videos are edited to match the music as much as possible.
It’s like a stealth mission where you try to find an attractive church that is unpopular and open when the sun is shining — and to come and go without anyone noticing. When the parish knows I’m coming, instructions and requests tend to come and there’s a lot of fuss. I like to do what I like and hope it gets approved. Once you’ve finished editing your video (it takes about 8 hours), send the YouTube link to your church along with a cover email. Reactions range from people who are really happy to people who have no reaction at all.
I grew up in a happy family with my younger brother and older sister. With my mother, a housewife, and my father, an architect. I loved elementary school, hated middle school, and couldn’t wait to leave. One of my first jobs with him was as a DJ. I had my own mobile disco and it was a lot of fun. I joined a local pantomime group, where I became a little friendly with my future wife, Rachel. We went to the same Catholic school and she was Catholic. We dated for 7 years, separated for 7 years, and finally got married in 2009 at our local Catholic church.
I remember going to Anglican church with my parents when I was young. My elementary school was C of E. We said the Lord’s Prayer and sang hymns every day. That was fun for me.
I went to a Catholic middle school, Although I had great teachers and did well academically, I was shunned by my local friend group and, as a non-Catholic, I always felt like an outsider. But there is no doubt that the seeds for my later conversion to Catholicism were planted by our parish priest.
I get angry when teachers abandon less able children and don’t give them the help they need. When success in school is measured by test scores, it’s easy to see why some teachers spend their limited time solely trying to improve borderline students.
Making music makes me happy. Video production has been my hobby since my early 20s. I used to do wedding videography, but music is my true love. I like writing pop tunes and electronic dance music. I have an alter ego called Nequado who distributes music on Spotify and YouTube, but they all fail spectacularly.
I also wrote some hymns, And two – “There is a shining light” and “Alleluia! Today a king is born” are the most popular. My ultimate goal is to leave at least one published song in the world, whether it’s a pop song or a hymn, before the Lord calls me. For me, it’s a mission accomplished, and above all, it makes me happy.
I love the sound of children singing. A four-part choir.Nuns singing like the Benedictines of Mary Queen of the Apostles.
Good always triumphs over evil. We receive a lot of bad news from around the world, but good deeds, big and small, also happen all the time. Believing that God came into this world to save us is reason enough for all of us to have hope.
I pray for my loved ones, For my family and friends, for my parishioners who are ill, and for those in need.
I choose to be locked in a church with a World War II hero, Colin Gubbins (Director of Special Operations Executive), Winston Churchill, Dwight Eisenhower, and others. Or Clint Eastwood would also be an attractive companion. I’d love to hear about his westerns, the Dirty Harry movies, and my favorite movies. A place where the Eagles take on bold challenges.
Nick Swann was talking to Terrence Handley McMath.
His videos are uploaded to his YouTube channel “England’s Old Churches”.
