Before the plot of “95 Senses” was created, Jared Hess and Jirusha Hess They wanted to lead a project that would give several animators the opportunity to work on a film. “I wanted five or six animators and producers to come on board. [writers] chris bowman and hubbell palmer I said, “Let’s write a story that briefly features each of them.” That’s how they came up with the five senses as a way to tell the carp story,” Jirusha told Gold Derby in a recent web chat (Watch the exclusive video interview above).
“95 Senses” centers on Koi, an old man who narrates memories associated with each of his senses as an eerie event approaches. The short is currently nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. This is the first time a husband and wife have been appointed as directors. The couple is best known for co-writing and directing comedies such as “Napoleon Dynamite,” “Nacho His Libre,” and “Gentlemen Broncos.”
From there, a contest was held, with entries coming in from all over the world, and Jared and Jirusha selected the animators they thought would contribute the most to the short. Jared was particularly impressed with the hand-crafted aesthetic that some of the animators brought to the project. “The interview with the main character, Koi, was conducted by this man. daniel blousonIt was hand-painted with watercolors on paper and then photographed, and although you don’t see much animation like that, it was very tactile and worked beautifully for the film. ”
One of the key elements that helped the animators decide on the right tone for each section actually came from the film’s only voice actor. tim blake nelsonand the narration he provided. “When we had all the narrated work to share with the animators, they took cues from his performance and built the visuals around it. So the tone was actually set by him. They had the idea off the script page, but hearing it brought to life by him changed everything.”
