Ian Bailey spoke of his faith in God in his last interview before his death, saying, “God exists and I hope he exists.”
The main suspect in the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier did not believe that God was him or her, but in the last years of his life he turned to prayer.
He was interviewed at Bantry Hospital after suffering his second heart attack, along with members of award-winning director Jim Sheridan’s documentary team. The work will feature in the next episode of the Sky series, ‘Murder at the Cottage’.

A 66-year-old British man has spoken of his fear of dying and how his life was destroyed by Sophie’s murder.
However, he did not confess at the last minute and maintained his innocence until the end.
He knew he didn’t have much time to live due to his deteriorating heart condition and wanted to set the record straight.
“He talked about God and whether such a thing existed. He believed there was a God and he believed he was going to a better place,” the source said. Ta.
“Ian became very religious and philosophical during the last years of his life, especially after he started living on his own.
“He was keen to clear his name before he died and was extremely frustrated by the slow pace of the Garda cold case investigation into the murder.
“He was very upset when he learned that detectives were not focusing on other new suspects during the interrogation, and that the focus was on him rather than pursuing new leads. It lasted 40 to 50 minutes and was very interesting.”
Meanwhile, gardaí continue to investigate the cold case despite Ian Bailey’s death.
The new investigation is expected to last at least another year before the file is sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
A Garda source said: “This is a long-term investigation and all investigative avenues are being considered. They are not going to close the file and stop everything just because Ian Bailey has died.” .
“My understanding is that there are no other suspects that have emerged this far apart from him. But you never know. Things could change and people might come forward with new evidence. unknown.
“Sophie’s family deserves to know the truth somehow.”
