U.V.A. Gretchen Walsh She once again swam the nation’s top time at last week’s Cavalier Invite, clocking a 1:52.34 in the 200 IM final, catapulting her to the top of the national rankings in an event not normally included in the championship lineup. SwimSwam interviewed Gretchen after the session to hear her thoughts on her swim, which she decided to race last week, and her overall feelings heading into the ACC, NCAA and Olympic Trials.
Walsh, who focuses on the free sprint, fly and back, hadn’t swum the meet in more than two years, and her previous lifetime best of 1:58.12 was the first in almost four years. Ta. She shattered that mark in the morning session by qualifying with a time of 1:54.71, but her visibly shutting out energy on her last few strokes caused her to lose even more energy. It was obvious that it had accumulated.
Heading into this week’s ACC, she currently leads the nation in the 200 IM, 50 free (20.79), 100 free (46.40), 200 free (1:41.32), 100 back (48.77) and 100 fly (49.11). There is. It will be interesting to see what event she chooses for her third day, although it seems almost certain that she will swim the 50m and the 100m in her NCAA free. Sho.
