PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The Steelers have interviewed former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith for the team’s offensive coordinator position.
The team announced Sunday that Smith, who was fired from the Falcons’ head coaching position at the end of last season, had interviewed for the job.
While Smith was the head coach in Atlanta, his teams went 7-10 in all three seasons in Atlanta, ranking 17th in total offense and 26th in scoring.
Prior to becoming Atlanta’s head coach, Smith served as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans in 2019 and 2020.
Rich coordinator search
So at least four candidates have been interviewed for the job, but one has already been eliminated.
The team had requested permission for an interview. Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Zach RobinsonoHowever, he is now heading to Atlanta to take on the role of offensive coordinator under new coach Raheem Morris.
The other two candidates the Steelers interviewed for the offensive coordinator position are: Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson and Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown.
Pittsburgh’s search for a new offensive coordinator has begun after Matt Canada was fired midway through the season.
Duties as Canada’s offensive coordinator and playcaller were split between Eddie Faulkner and Mike Sullivan until the end of the season.
In a press conference after the Steelers lost to the Buffalo Bills in the postseason, head coach Mike Tomlin said the team would look for its next offensive coordinator outside the organization, but did not specify when he would hire him. There wasn’t.
