“We asked him to join the program, but he chose not to.”
The Gobbler and Smithy is one of the most iconic bromances in British sitcom history. Over three series, viewers across the UK found themselves as obsessed with Gavin and Stacey’s friendship as they were with their romance.
But it’s been well documented how James Corden and Matthew Horne became estranged off-screen after the demise of Gavin and Stacey.
It was on this series that the duo achieved national fame, and to this day Gavin and Stacey remains one of the best-loved British comedies of the 21st century.
However, after it ended in 2010, rumors began to circulate that Corden and Hawn had a falling out.
Corden spoke about this on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories in 2019, admitting that the pair had become estranged.
When Morgan asked the truth behind their relationship, Corden said: We had a very strong love for each other and we were one person for a long time and we had the best time.
“And the truth is, we just ran with these things that were offered to us. If I have one regret, it’s just rushing things.”
However, he was upset when host Morgan informed him that Hawn had been approached to appear on the episode to talk about his Gavin and Stacey co-stars, but Hawn had refused.
In a clip from the episode, Morgan asks, “What’s going on between you two right now?”
Corden replies, “I love you, I love you,” and Morgan asks if he “talks a lot.”
“Well, we talk sometimes, yeah,” Corden replies.
Morgan then says, “We asked him to participate in this program, and he chose not to participate.”
After a moment of visibly shocked Corden said: But I can understand it, and I can understand why. ”
He added that it was a “difficult time to talk about” because “it didn’t end the way I wanted it to”.
Hawn herself denied ever falling out with Corden and took issue with Life Stories’ portrayal of Morgan’s decision not to be interviewed.
He cited scheduling conflicts and a general dislike of Morgan and “everything he stands for” as reasons for not being available for interviews.
He told the Times: “That’s when rumors started that we had a falling out and it snowballed from there.
“I didn’t appear on that show because I was filming outside London and my interview was only available for one day and I couldn’t do it. did.
“Another reason is that I hate Piers Morgan and everything he stands for.”
He continued: “The truth is there has never been a rift and everything is fine. James and I have always been friends and always will be.
“I talk to him a lot given the time zones, but it’s great to see him again and do things together.”
And of course, since the Life Stories episode, the pair have also co-starred in the Gavin & Stacey 2019 Christmas Special.
