A new name has been added to coach Jerrod Mayo’s list of offensive coordinator candidates.
According to NFL Network, San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury has interviewed for the New England Patriots coordinator position.
Fleury has gained extensive experience in all facets of soccer throughout his coaching career. He coaches defensive linemen, defensive backs, and outside linebackers on multiple of his NFL teams, as well as coordinating defense and special teams with his units at the collegiate level.
Fleury, who joined San Francisco in 2019, initially served as a defensive quality control coach, but also served in a similar role on offense in 2020-2021. Fleury was later named the team’s tight ends coach in 2022.
In addition to his extensive experience in all facets of football, Fleury himself is a former quarterback who played at Towson from 1999 to 2002. His time as a quarterback has been a major contributor to Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and the Patriots appear to be interested in implementing this scheme based on interviews with offensive coordinators.
“Playing quarterback gave me a good understanding of the offense from a quarterback’s perspective,” Fleury told The Athletic last year. “Kyle’s offense builds from there. The best way to be successful with it is to understand what the quarterback is thinking, what the timing of the plays is, what the quarterback sees from a yardage standpoint. Knowing makes the decision-making process faster and easier when it comes to defining routes.
“If you can think in those terms, it makes it easier to play any position running routes and catching the ball.”
Fleury joins a long list of reported interviews for the Patriots’ offensive coordinator position. Still being mentioned as candidates are Rams assistants Zach Robinson and Nick Keary, Texas QB coach Jerrod Johnson, Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown and Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Brown. Engstrand and former Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.
