De chinzen’s innovative new format features contemporary interviews with influential historical figures.
Independent international distribution company Lineup Industries explores key moments in history and brings them to life in an all-new format, Interview with History.
The hybrid show, which combines documentary and drama, is being optioned by media and entertainment giant Banijay in multiple territories including Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Portugal and the UK. Lineup Industries also signed a separate deal with Creative Ventures to bring the format to the UAE.
Interviews with History interviews key figures from the past at key moments in their lives, giving insight into the inner thoughts, feelings, and motivations that guided their actions. This hybrid format, created by De chinezen and co-developed with public broadcaster VRT, has been praised for its innovation and achieved high ratings in Belgium. The format combines documentary and dramatized interviews, bringing the past to life as the protagonists face critical historical dilemmas.
This unique approach allows the series host and film crew to be firmly present in the present day, interviewing key figures directly from the period setting and bridging the gap between past and present. The show also provides historical context by visiting important locations and revealing unseen historic landmarks and buildings, as well as featuring modern-day figures related to historical figures.
Ed Lowerse, founder of Lineup Industries, said: “The format has incredible scope, allowing interviews with key figures from every historical era, every culture and every field. We are making history’s influential figures and events more accessible than ever. Given its great track record and reputation, Banijay is pleased to collaborate with us to bring this unique proposition to multiple markets across Europe. The ideal partner to do so.”
Helen Greaterox, Head of Acquisitions at Banijay, said: “We’re always looking at a wide range of third-party formats to complement our services, especially those with strong reviews and interesting storytelling techniques. Interviews with History’s originality lies in the combination of documentary and drama. It stands out given the creativity it brings together and is sure to resonate with audiences beyond the areas we represent. Our production company has begun pitching the project to local broadcasters. I can’t wait to do it.”
Arnaut Hauben, co-founder of De chinezen and host of the Belgian series, added: “This new television format breaks the laws of the universe. History is no longer presented as a chronological list of facts. Instead, it is a collection of important facts that reporters can directly intervene in and become part of the story. It conveys history through moments. It breaks convention and encourages active engagement with the past.”
