there was We live in an era where getting a job at Google or Amazon is the ticket to long-term stability and success. Many big tech companies seem immune to large-scale layoffs, and as profits soar, these menial jobs have become extremely popular. But economic headwinds and the impending impact of AI are driving seismic changes in the tech industry.
In the first seven weeks of this year alone, Amazon, Google, Discord, Duolingo, Cisco, Instacart, and dozens of other companies made significant layoffs. In total, this will mean tens of thousands of jobs will be lost across the industry, and the pace of layoffs will continue. It doesn’t help that interviews for technology jobs are also becoming more difficult, and employers are demanding more work and demanding more rigorous testing before hiring.
This week, WIRED senior writer Paresh Dave joins us to discuss whether layoffs will subside and why now is a daunting time to find a tech job.
