The Singapore World Spirits Competition has compiled its annual list of the best drinks in all the major adult beverage categories, and we’re here to bring you the results exclusively before anyone else. Last week, the prestigious panel of judges revealed the bottle they chose as the world’s best bourbon. Now it’s time to see what the “Lion City” had to say about the ultimate vodka.
But first, a little about the competition itself. Founded by the Tasting Alliance in 2019, the Singapore World Spirits Competition initially focused on spirits produced and consumed in the Asia-Pacific region. It has since expanded to include a more global perspective; almost all of the judges, and the majority of the thousands of entries they taste, are from this corner of the globe. Today, the competition is considered one of the premier spirits tastings in the Asia-Pacific region.
Let’s go back to the Best in Show vodka chosen by the Singapore judges in 2024. The judges didn’t choose an Asian vodka, but the winner was do From Oceania. Pluto Vodka is from the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia. This 80% alcoholic strength vodka is made from 100% organic Australian sugar cane at the distillery of the same name. This unique ingredient is also cold fermented and goes through a 10-time distillation process to create a more expressive type of vodka.
Poured from the bottle, it’s subtly sweet, as you’d expect. But a sip reveals an equally alluring, rich body reminiscent of coconut cream, as does the nose. These characteristics undoubtedly won the approval of the Singapore judges, and they’re not the only ones so enthralled: last year alone, Pluto Spirits won a Master Medal at the Global Vodka Masters and Best Vodka at the Tasting Australia Spirit Awards 2023.
Pluto batch-distills their vodka without any additives and sells it for around 68 Australian dollars (about 46 US dollars). For an extra 10 dollars, they’ll ship it across Australia. The only catch is that it’s not sold in the US yet. Given the brand’s recent success, you might see Pluto products on US store shelves soon. In addition to vodka, the distillery also makes gin and two tasty rums, so keep an eye out for those too.
Meanwhile, we will be returning soon with some newly crowned champions from Singapore – keep posted here to be the first to know.
