Pro-Palestinian demonstrators vandalized a World War I monument and burned an American flag in Central Park on Monday night after being prevented by police from attending the Met Gala.
About 1,000 protesters took to the streets of New York, marching down Madison Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and breaking through barricades blocking access to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the gala was being held.
Demonstrators could be heard shouting: we won’t quit. We don’t rest! ” They marched to the star-studded event.
Police were able to divert the group into Central Park, with two officers standing deep inside and blocking them from entering the celebration.
Video posted on X (formerly Twitter) showed police officers detaining some demonstrators outside the event and chanting “let them go” across the street.
