Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was attacked in the streets of Copenhagen.
Frederiksen was assaulted on Friday night in Kurtorvet in central Copenhagen, Denmark.
The prime minister’s office confirmed that the attacker had since been arrested and that the prime minister had left after being “beaten”.
The office added that she was “shocked” by the incident but gave no further details about her condition.
Danish police also confirmed that a suspect had been arrested but declined to comment further.
Leaders across Europe have now condemned the attack on the 46-year-old man.
Lithuanian President Edgars Rinkevics said on X: “Shocking news about the attack on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen this evening. Violence has no place in a democratic society.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she condemned “this despicable act, which goes against everything we believe in and fight for in Europe.”
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said he was “deeply shocked” by the assault on a colleague and friend.
“I strongly condemn any form of violence against democratically elected leaders in our free society. I think of you and wish you strength during these difficult times,” he added.
Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya, a political activist and former presidential candidate who defected from Belarus, “strongly” condemned the incident and said she “wishes her all the best in her recovery.”
“Such violence is a direct attack on democracy itself,” said Tsikhanouskaya, who leads the opposition from neighbouring Lithuania and Poland to the government of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
According to Danish media outlet BT, witness Soren Kjaergaard, who was working at Kluber on Friday, said he saw the prime minister sit down with a friend before security guards rushed in to “wake him up.”
The bar manager told the outlet that the woman appeared slightly shaken but did not show any signs of having been punched.
