Political leaders around the world responded to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump with prayers and condemnations of political violence.
The Republican front-runner’s campaign released a statement saying Trump was “OK” shortly after he was shot at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. In a post on Truth Social, Trump acknowledged that he had been shot above his right ear.
One person was killed and two others were seriously injured at the rally after the suspect, who authorities confirmed was dead, fired multiple shots at the stage around 6:15 p.m.
World leaders were shocked by the news, as were many Americans across the country.
“It’s never acceptable”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was one of the first to respond, saying he and his wife were praying for former President Donald Trump.
“Sarah and I are shocked by this apparent attack on President Trump,” he said in a post on Twitter. “We pray for his safety and speedy recovery.”
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was also quick to lend his support to the former president, whom he met just a few days ago at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
“My thoughts and prayers are with President Trump at this dark hour,” Orban wrote.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned all forms of political violence following the shooting.
In a post on X, Mr Starmer said he was “appalled” by the assassination attempt and offered his “heartfelt prayers” to the former president and his family.
“Political violence in any form has no place in our society and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack,” Starmer said.
Prime Minister Trudeau said he was “disgusted” by the shootings.
“It cannot be emphasized enough that political violence will never be tolerated,” Trudeau said in a social media post. “My thoughts are with former President Trump, those who attended the event, and all Americans.”
Chilean President Gabriel Boric, in his response to the X incident, said violence was a threat to democracy.
“From Chile, I completely condemn the events that took place today in the United States,” Bolick wrote in Spanish. “I wish former President Donald Trump a speedy recovery, the facts be known and justice be served.”
