World leaders from Europe to South America to Asia have spoken out against political violence following the shooting that injured a former U.S. president.
Presidents and prime ministers around the world have voiced their support for former US President Donald Trump and spoke out against political violence following the attempted assassination of the Republican candidate at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
Saturday’s gunfire struck President Trump in his right ear and killed a bystander. Two other spectators were also seriously injured.
The U.S. Secret Service said it shot and killed the suspect.
Here’s how world leaders responded:
England
British Prime Minister Starmer said on Sunday he was “appalled by the shocking scenes” at the rally, and sent his “best wishes” to Trump.
“Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack,” the British prime minister wrote.
Canada
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was “disgusted” by the shootings.
“It cannot be emphasized enough that political violence will never be tolerated. My thoughts are with former President Trump, the participants in the event, and all Americans,” he wrote.
european union
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said he was “shocked” by news of the attack.
“Once again we are witnessing an unacceptable act of violence against our political representatives,” he wrote to X.
India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “deeply concerned by the attack on our friend.”
He added, “I strongly condemn this incident. Violence has no place in politics or in our democracy. I pray for his speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of those who died, those injured, and the American people.”
Japan
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also opposed political attacks, saying, “We must resolutely stand up to any violence that challenges democracy.”
“Wishing President Trump a speedy recovery,” he wrote to X.
Hungary
Prime Minister Viktor Orban said his “thoughts and prayers” were with Trump “in these dark hours.”
Italy
Premier Giorgia Meloni said she was “following with anxiety” the latest updates from Pennsylvania and wished Trump a speedy recovery.
She also expressed hope that “dialogue and responsibility can prevail over hatred and violence in the coming months of the campaign.”
Australia
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the shooting as “alarming and confrontational” and expressed relief that President Trump was safe.
“There is no place for violence in the democratic process,” he added.
Argentina
President Javier Milley blamed the “international left” for what he called a “despicable assassination attempt.”
“After losing the elections, they panic and resort to terrorism to impose their backward-looking and authoritarian policies,” the populist president said.
Brazil
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the shooting “must be strongly condemned by all defenders of democracy and political dialogue.”
“What we saw today is unacceptable.”
Chile
President Gabriel Boric said he “completely condemns” the shooting.
“Violence is a threat to democracy and undermines our common life. We must all reject violence,” Bolick said.
Taiwan
President William Lai Chin-teh said his thoughts and prayers were with Trump and wished the former president a speedy recovery.
“Political violence in any form will never be tolerated in our democracy and I offer my deepest condolences to the victims of this attack,” he said.
new zealand
Prime Minister Christopher Lacson said he was shocked by the attack on President Trump. “No country should face such political violence,” he wrote on Twitter.
Philippines
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he was greatly relieved to hear that President Trump was safe following the assassination attempt on him.
“Together with all democracy-loving people around the world, we condemn all forms of political violence. The voice of the people must always come first,” he wrote.
Israel
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he and his wife, Sara, were “shocked by the apparent attack on President Trump.” The prime minister added that he “wishes him safety and a speedy recovery” in the country.
