The 2017 World Athletics Championships in London was Usain Bolt’s last competition.
UK Sport and UK Athletics are planning to bid to host the 2029 World Championships.
London and the UK last hosted the event in 2017.
A feasibility study would need to be carried out, but BBC Sport said sporting leaders were “determined” to host a “transformative” major championship.
British Athletics chief executive Jack Buckner told BBC Sport: “In 2029 we hope to take another leap forward and compete in the world championships.”
“We just do a great job. Everyone talks about the atmosphere and all the events we do.
“First of all, we need to do a feasibility study and consider what the different options are.”
He said it would be “in my mind” that London would be the host city if the bid was successful.
“I can’t say for sure that it will be in London, but given the success we’ve had so far, we think it will be in London. [2017] Transformative and built since 2012 [the Olympic Games]. It was transformative in every sense of the word,” he added.
Glasgow will host the World Indoor Championships at the weekend, while Birmingham will host the 2026 European Championships.
Britain’s Josh Kerr, who was crowned indoor men’s 3,000m world champion in Glasgow on Saturday, said the home world championships would mark a “true full-circle moment”.
“My first World Championships was in London in 2017, so it would be incredible if that happened and it will definitely motivate me to continue running 1500m for as long as possible.” the Scot, who is also the 1500m world champion, told BBC Sport.
“It is important for the UK to host athletics competitions because generations of athletes have had the courage to know that there are athletes from their homeland who have a shot at winning lots of medals in front of their home crowd. Because it gives.
“It’s going to make a huge difference to athletics, especially grassroots, and it’s going to help with coaching and allow people to know the next steps in our lives and where some of our athletes are at right now.”
The ambition to stage the 2029 event forms part of wider hosting ambitions due to be announced by funding body UK Sport on Tuesday.
The 2025 World Championships are scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan. Last month, the Chinese capital, Beijing, was chosen as the 2027 venue.
