Antonella Korda Gil Isola dei Nuraghi IGT 2018, Sardinia
Gil is the local ancient name for a ship used to store oil and wine in Sardinia. That is also the name of this very interesting skin contact wine made from Vermentino. Aged for 6 to 10 months in sealed amphorae, only around 3,000 bottles were produced.
According to the producer’s comments, this golden wine is the result of “long maceration and patience” and features complex tropical and stone fruits, dried nut skins, candied lemon zest and lemon compote. A rich, honey-like sip. This is a full-bodied wine with luxurious, glycerol and herbal flavors, and a bit on the wild side. It has an aged Riesling vibe, and even a bit of petrol on the nose. It’s interesting and fun, but I was disappointed to finish it because the number of bottles produced was small.
Born into a family of wine producers, Antonella Korda founded the winery in 2010 on the vineyards inherited from her grandfather. She practices sustainable viticulture. According to a note on her winery’s website, she says: A complex floral bouquet is combined with powerful fruity and mineral aromas, integrated into a body with golden reflections. Terracotta-smooth tannins and strong acidity capture your attention with every sip. ”
