The United States, making their debut in the ICC T20 World Cup tournament, got off to an impressive start with a seven-wicket defeat of Canada at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.
Next up, 2009 champions Pakistan proved a formidable opponent for the co-hosts, but despite being outnumbered, the Americans fought tooth and nail to shock Babar Azam’s team at a packed Grande Prairie Stadium.
The US bowlers restricted Pakistan to 159 for seven before taking the score to the Super Over, where Pakistan’s star pace bowler Mohammed Amir bowled the Super Over, conceding 18 runs to the US in an eight-ball over.
In reply, the US restricted Pakistan to 13/1 in a thrilling Super Over to claim two valuable points.
After the win, USA captain Monank Patel detailed how his team kept the Greenshirts in check.
“We won the toss in the first six overs and the way we bowled we took wickets and kept them quiet. We knew they would get their chances after the combination. We knew it was a match where we could aim for 160 and all we needed was a combination. You’re playing a World Cup and you can’t do that every year. We gave it our all with every ball,” the USA captain said.
The United States advanced to the tournament’s Super Eight despite the cancellation of their final group game against Ireland at Broward County Stadium in Florida due to rain.
Alongside India who topped Group A with seven points from four matches, the USA finished second in the group with five points from four matches, sealing a place in the Super Eight.
