Although we never see ‘Maanji’ on stage, no one in the audience forgets the fact that she influenced Sahil Ludhianvi’s life and poetry. When her mother dies, it becomes clear that her poet days are numbered. This relationship, among others, is part of the lens through which Danish actor, playwright and director Hussain spotlights Abdul Hayee, the legendary Urdu poet and lyricist who wrote under the pen name Sahir Ludhianvi. As a member of the Progressive Writers’ Association and a supporter of communism, Sahir achieved a reputation that went beyond his literary genius. But the late 1940s were a dangerous time for everyone. Sulha, literally “red color”, meaning intellectual. The Pakistani government was all too eager to keep this young poet in prison. Mr. Sahil fled to Delhi, but he carried some kind of trauma with him.
Danish, who plays Sahil in the play, brings out all the struggles of the poet through his powerful and unique storytelling. It is a sign of Sahir’s eternal relevance that his words, the words of Sahir, seem to be addressed to today’s audience. But Sahil’s love poems are just as powerful as his ‘social cause’ poems. The play utilizes some of his most famous poems written for Hindi films. Jaan kya tune kahi, kabhi kabhi mere dil mein, abhi na jaao chodkar.. What is important in Sahil’s love poems is to position the beloved as an equal partner. She is neither a shy mistress nor a high-minded lady in the tradition of courtly love. Sahil’s love, unrequited and unfruitful, moves and revels in uncharted territory. This year’s National Drama School’s annual drama festival begins with: Main pal do pal ka shayal hun. After grand shows at the National Center for Performing Arts (NCPA) and Prithvi Theater in Mumbai, this will be Danish’s first performance in Delhi as Sahil. Javed Akhtar was Sahil’s much younger colleague in the world of films and Urdu poetry. They were also close friends. Sahil’s influence is evident in Javed Akhtar’s poems of resistance and rebellion. Danes, a much younger poet, did not have the same luck. But he found a way to claim Sahil’s inheritance.
