Conservatives at City Hall showed their true colors last week, voting against London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s budget and his plan to give hungry children at school nutritious meals every day.
We know that free school meals are changing lives in London. They are saving families over £1,000 per child at a time when bills are soaring.
Policies such as free school meals will change life in London
Previously, the government provided meals only to the poorest people. Parents on Universal Credit had to earn less than £7,400 a year to qualify. It meant thousands of children missed out and 180,000 children across London going hungry. Many of those who did obtain them faced the stigma of poverty.
This is just one of the ways we have helped to protect London from the damage the Conservatives have inflicted on the rest of the country. This is the kind of difference that occurs when Labor comes to power, at all levels of government.
Our party has naturally been focused on winning the general election. With a string of impressive by-election wins, it’s easy to see why. However, it remains unclear when that will be, with some speculation that the government may try to shorten the time until the end of the year.
We don’t know when the general will be, but parliamentary elections will be held in May
We know that the London mayoral and parliamentary elections will be held on the 2nd.n.d. May – Along with other mayors, councilors and PCCs outside of London.
If the Conservatives decide to hold elections on the same day and call off the elections, it looks like these elections will easily happen. If these elections were to take place in isolation, it is hard to imagine that Westminster’s hatred of the Tories would cross the line.
The government is trying every trick to gerrymander these polls. Voters will be required to present a photo ID, which the election commission said turned away 4% of non-voters in last year’s municipal elections.
Photo ID voting is bad news for diverse cities
London’s population is very diverse, and the communities least likely to have ID are over-represented here, potentially further skewing the results.
The government also changed the voting system. Until now, Londoners have had first and second choices when it comes to running for mayor. No one was asking for it to change.
But the Conservatives in Westminster stripped him of his second choice. Some people who previously voted for the Greens or Liberal Democrats used their second choice to vote Labor. Eliminating the second priority seems to rig the system in their favor.
Conservatives raise election spending cap by 80%
In 2021, the Conservatives came within 5% of Labor’s vote for mayor, which was closer than anyone expected. This time the Conservatives have increased the spending limit by 80% to £760,000 and we expect them to spend it.
So Labor faces an uphill battle in a solo election if it wants to secure a historic third term for Sadiq Khan, and will need Labor MPs to help him take office.
Our track record at City Hall is impressive. As well as free school meals, the mayor has frozen public transport fares, delivered the highest level of council building since the 1970s, and filled the funding gap left by the government for police and policing. Firefighter.

In addition to this, our Labor mayors and London assembly members have put the government under intense scrutiny across the country.

As well as trying to take food away from starving children, there are some serious questions about Conservative mayoral candidate Susan Hall’s values. Her social media history shows that she is out of Londoners’ priorities.
Londoners lost when the Conservative Party, under Mayor Boris Johnson, was in power at City Hall. He colluded with the Conservatives in government to remove TfL’s central funding and shift the burden onto overburdened commuters.
He removed social housing from London’s building plans. In the last year of his term, the only year in which he controlled almost all of City Hall’s housing supply, he only funded his three homes as social rent. Compare that to the current mayor, who last year funded 6,380.
Don’t let the Tories hold London back
He squandered funds on vanity projects such as the unfinished Garden Bridge, while overseeing a plan to cut City Hall’s revenue that left a gaping hole in the budget in the long run. The same thing is expected to happen again if the Conservatives win in London.
During their 14 years in power, the Conservatives have suppressed London, at the expense of much damage to the rest of the country. Members, activists and community members must be careful not to get another chance in London.
