There’s even a scene near the end of “Warriors” where Swann and Mercy ride the subway home from prom with a group of their peers wearing suits, dresses, and corsages. Later, when Swan (Michael Beck) and Marcy (Deborah Van Valkenburgh) arrive at Coney Island, they both envision a future away from New York and their upbringings.
“It’s easy to forget that the characters are teenagers. It’s easy to forget how old they actually are, and the lives they live are affected by different circumstances: their finances, their upbringing, etc. “It’s a reminder that it depends on a variety of factors,” says Bailey.
The Warriors may have been met with skepticism from critics at first, but spectators flocked to see it. She ultimately grossed $22.5 million from a $4 million budget. However, violence was rampant at some screenings, and three of the murders were related to people watching or planning to see the film. Paramount canceled its release, and its popularity waned after it disappeared from theaters.
But perhaps it’s Hill’s virtuoso filmmaking and ability to make such a simple story so evocative, or a story about gangs and youth rebellion, that kept generations coming back to Warriors. This is probably because I was attracted to this film, which depicts it without criticism. Or maybe viewers just want to romanticize how dangerous and dirty New York was in the 1970s, especially when compared to today’s safe and sanitary conditions.
