Twenty-four teams will take part in the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup in Australia after the World Rugby Council approved a historic rethink of the competition’s format, duration and timing.

Reflecting World Rugby’s mission to increase the competitiveness, reach, influence and value of international rugby globally, the 11th annual men’s pinnacle event will see the world’s top teams compete from 1 October to 1 October. They will compete for the right to host the Webb Ellis Cup over a six-week period. 13 November 2027.
The new format features six pools of four teams and adds a round of 16 before the quarterfinals.
This will allow us to shorten the tournament duration from seven to six weeks, while promoting a momentum-building rhythm throughout the pool phase and respecting the same minimum rest days between matches as in France 2023 .
