Tyler Perry is expanding his deal with Netflix to include more TV series. Netflix announced Monday that it has added a multi-year, first-look series deal with Perry to the previous feature film deal he signed with the streamer in October.
As part of the expanded relationship with Netflix, Perry is developing a 16-episode one-hour drama, Beauty in Black, which he will write, direct and executive produce. According to Netflix, “Beauty in Black follows two women who lead very different lives. Kimmy is kicked out of the house by her mother and struggles to make ends meet, and Mallory Although he is a successful businessman, the two find their lives intertwined.
Ange Bones and Tony Strickland will also produce “Beauty in Black” for Tyler Perry Studios.
Perry’s deal with Netflix replaces a multi-year content partnership with Paramount Global that he signed in 2017 (when the company was known as Viacom).
Perry has another ongoing relationship with BET, partnering in 2019 to create content for both the cable network and its new streaming service, BET+. Over the course of four years, Perry produced hit series such as “The Sistas” and “The Oval” (which recently celebrated its 100th episode). Those shows later spawned spin-offs like “Zatima” (featuring characters from “Sistas”) and “Ruthless” (from “The Oval”). He has over 10 of his series on BET and is also a co-owner of BET+.
When Paramount Global briefly considered selling BET, Mr. Perry was one of the top players considering buying it.
Announced in October, Perry’s multi-year first-look deal with Netflix will see the creative partnership extend to eight films over four years to write, direct and produce feature films. Perry’s upcoming Netflix films include the World War II drama “Six Triple Eight,” starring Kerry Washington, and the thriller “Me Culpa,” starring Kelly Rowland.
Perry’s relationship with Netflix goes back to past films such as “Jazzman’s Blues,” “A Madea Homecoming,” and “Fall from Grace.”
