A Welsh restaurant has retained its elusive ‘world class’ status at the Good Food Guide’s first ever awards ceremony. Named one of the world’s best restaurants in August, Ynyshir is one of only four restaurants to be named in the guide’s top category in 2024 and named the best Welsh restaurant in the UK by the guide. It was one of three houses. .
The restaurant, based in Machinelleth, is Wales’ first and only two Michelin star restaurant. The restaurant, run by Gareth Ward and his partner Amelia Erickson, is set in a Diffie estuary house that once served as Queen Victoria’s retreat, offering a dining experience for £395 per person.
It was shortlisted for Restaurant of the Year, along with The Sportsman in Kent, Le Manoir aux Catheisons in Oxfordshire, Lancorum in Cumbria and The Pine in Northumberland. The Sportsman won this category, joining Iny Seal and two other restaurants in the UK that have been rated world-class by the guide. Inyseal maintained its ‘world class’ rating, alongside Lancashire’s Lancrum and Moor Hall, which were also nominated for Restaurant of the Year. His two other Welsh restaurants, Annun in Narberth and Home in Penarth, maintained their ‘exceptional’ rankings, with new entrants from London, Cumbria and North Yorkshire joining the list.
Home, a Michelin-starred restaurant founded by father and son James and Georgia Somerin, is a family-owned and operated restaurant serving cuisine with global influences. Described by the Michelin Guide as a ‘sustainable and proudly Welsh’ restaurant with ‘genuine warmth’, Annwn has gone from strength to strength just a few months after moving to its new location.
The winners and top-rated restaurants were announced at the Good Food Guide’s inaugural awards ceremony held at the Theater Royal Drury Lane in London on Tuesday 30th January. Editor Elizabeth Carter said: “The Good Food Guide enters a new era with a new look and new rating system, but the guide’s deep-rooted values remain the same.”
“There has always been a lot of excitement around our awards, but this year we have overhauled them to better reflect the rapid changes in the UK eating out scene. We’re very proud of the whole thing, as well as all the restaurants featured on it. It sets a standard by which not only the winners but everyone else will be judged.” Get the best user experience with WalesOnline’s premium app apple or android
