Work planned by Torbay’s Rowcroft Hospice for dementia patients has been hailed as “world class”.
Torbay Council’s cabinet committee, which is discussing support across the three towns for people living with the disease, has heard how the hospice is planning an “fantastic” new facility.
The proposed ‘Lavender Square’ is just one part of a wider refurbishment of the hospice site, which will provide a 60-bed specialist dementia home for 10 residents in six households. Planning permission has already been granted.
Councilor Nick Bye (Conservative, Wellswood) said: “This is world class and something we can all be very proud of.”
Recent research has highlighted the urgent need for specialist dementia care in Torbay to cope with its aging population.
Congressman Bayh continued as follows: “This outlines the challenges not only in Torbay but nationally.
“Meeting the needs of people with dementia and those caring for people with dementia is a huge challenge.”
Councilor Hayley Tranter (Conservative, Goodrington-with-Roselands) added: “The work being done at Rowcroft is truly amazing.
“That’s pretty much what happens elsewhere, not here in Torbay. I’m really looking forward to getting to work.”
A cabinet committee unanimously supported the plan.
