At 309.6 meters high, the Shard is currently the tallest building in London, but did you know that it doesn’t have the highest public viewing platform in London? That title goes to Horizon 22. Horizon 22 has an observation deck 254 meters above the road, 11 meters higher than the Shard.
In any case, that record could soon be broken by a new tower being proposed for the City of London. The tower, known as One Undershaft, will be the tallest building in London (at 309.6 metres) and the tallest public viewing gallery. Well, if it’s approved.
While many of the City’s skyscrapers of this kind may be a bit more upmarket, with glass towers filled with suits, boardrooms and penthouses, One Undershaft’s plans are more public. It seems to be indicated in the location intended for access.
Plans prepared by Eric Parry Architects show a “podium garden” and an observation center, both of which will be open to the public. In addition, One Undershaft will boast two top floors of educational space, curated in collaboration with the Museum of London.
It all sounds very interesting – here are some renderings of what the completed One Undershaft will look like.
If you follow City of London planning applications closely (I know you’re out there), One Undershaft is set on a site that received planning permission for a skyscraper in 2016. You may have noticed. Those plans have since been significantly reworked and include: More greenery and public spaces.
If approved, the tower is expected to be completed by 2029. You can learn more about the tower on its official website here.
And One Undershaft isn’t the only skyscraper planned for the city in the coming years. Time Out recently covered how the region will see 11 new skyscrapers built by 2030 and how it could soon be home to one of Europe’s tallest buildings. .
