first cricket world cup Hosted in the continental US The tournament kicks off on June 1 and will feature Caribbean nations, led by two-time champions West Indies.
Don’t be afraid. It won’t linger.
This World Cup will be played in the Twenty20 format, the fastest and most action-packed version of cricket.
Unlike Test cricket matches, which initially had no time limit before being shortened to five days, T20 matches do not require breaks for tea or lunch and last just over three hours, roughly the same as a major league match.
Players will wear colourful uniforms as opposed to the all-white outfits worn in Test cricket.
When did TWENTY20 cricket start?
T20 was first played at franchise level in England in 2003. Cricket has been played in some form for at least 400 years, but T20 is a very early sport in the history of cricket.
Within four years, T20 has had its own World Cup and spawned a wide range of leagues across traditional and new cricket markets, with the most lucrative franchise cricket competition to date being the Indian Premier League.
Major League Cricket, which attracts players from all over the world, debuted in the United States last year. Season 2 will begin on July 4, four days after the T20 World Cup final.
Speed and entertainment
Two key elements of the T20 format are that the matches move faster, which generally makes them more exciting, and the duration of matches is shorter, making them more accessible to younger fans and those new to the sport, and (importantly) to television slots.
While the format leads to high-tempo action on the field, T20 has also sparked an evolution in cricket’s off-field entertainment. Cheerleaders dancing on the podium, DJs sitting behind the decks playing tunes and fancy dress themes are all part of the T20 game for the crowd, bringing a colourful new twist to those in the stadium and broadcast audiences alike.
There is typically a party atmosphere, and prizes are often awarded to anyone who can catch the ball with one hand when a player hits it into the crowd, although unlike baseball, the ball must be returned to the field.
rule
While the core rules of cricket remain applicable in T20 matches, there may still be some learning curve for new fans who are unfamiliar with the rule of leg-before-wicket (abbreviated “lbw”), which allows a batsman to be called out for using his leg pad to block a delivery that does not hit the stumps.
At least the bond will be gone. In Test cricket, he has two ways to go about a match where there is no winner even if it lasts five days.
However, in T20s, even if both teams score exactly the same number of runs (150 is an average score, 200+ is a good score), a “super over” is played to decide the outcome of the match. This means each team will score as many runs as possible in one over of his six balls, and the team that wins that tiebreaker wins the match.
The finer details
Similar to Test cricket and One-Day International cricket, this is a match between two teams of 11 players. Each team will have him bat for 20 overs (his 6 deliveries from the same bowler are consecutive) and excluding extras he will make 120 deliveries per innings. . Hence the name Twenty20.
The leather ball is white and resembles a baseball.
The bowler runs to the crease and uses a rotating arm action to bowl the ball, attempting to knock the bails off three 28-inch stumps from the opposite end of a 22-yard pitch. The batsman attempts to score as quickly as possible by hitting the ball over or between the fielders while defending the stumps.
So, at least in the T20 format, he will be hitting the ball out of the ground on a regular basis, as will home runs.
Past winners
Unlike the traditional Cricket World Cup, which was first held in 1975 and is primarily played in the 50-over format and has been dominated by Australia, who have won it six times, success in the global T20 tournament has been more evenly shared. Only the West Indies, representing the Caribbean nation, and England have won it twice. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia have one T20 title each.
Star
Virat Kohli, India: A feisty and formidable batsman who set records during his long career in the Indian Premier League and the national team. India’s national team is full of big-name stars, but no player commands more support than the 35-year-old former captain.
Rashid Khan Afghanistan: The 25-year-old leg-spinner is the top-ranked T20 bowler in international cricket and still features in the top 10. He has been a star in the IPL and for the Afghanistan national team.
Jofra Archer (England): When fit, he’s super fast. The Barbados-born paceman hasn’t played much cricket in recent years due to injuries, but his intimidating bowling and experience in Caribbean conditions have seen him make a hasty return to the defending champions’ side.
Mitch Marsh Australia: A big, burly “all-rounder” who can bat and bowl, Marsh has made impressive starts to get through the innings and can bowl fast. He is recovering from a hamstring problem that cut his IPL season short and is unlikely to bowl at the start of the World Cup, but he will still play as captain. He was a player in the final when Australia won their first T20 world title in 2021.
