Make-up artist Hannah Martin, who counts Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie among her regular customers, explains. “This is a classic technique where her makeup artists layer lipstick in stages to get a really hard-to-come-off effect,” she explains. With his trained expert eye, Martin found that the particular shade of red the 34-year-old Grammy winner wore was Pat McGrath Labs’ Elson, a beautiful true matte and long-wearing red. I guess it is.
But no matter how long-lasting a lipstick claims to be, what makes it truly kissable is all in the layering. Swift previously told a beauty magazine: allure Her makeup artist, Laurie Turk, uses the same lipstick layering technique.
And while there are plenty of liquid lipsticks on the market that claim to be completely smudge-proof, they aren’t always the most comfortable to wear and can often have a drying effect. You may already have a bulleted list of your favorite lipstick colors. It’s enough to make it last all day. Whether you want a lipstick that won’t come off because you can’t be bothered to reapply it during the day, or you want to make a public display of affection like Swift, here’s Martin’s step-by-step guide.
first step
Condition your lips by gently removing dead skin using an old toothbrush or cotton flannel. This is because if your lips are dry, it will show up quickly and make your lips look extra flaky. Next, Martin suggests applying lip balm to moisturize your lips, but don’t forget to remove it with a tissue before applying lipstick. Lanolips Original Basic Balm with Vanilla (£5) is very good, as is Elizabeth Arden’s 8-Hour Intensive Lip Repair Balm (£22) and Good Old Vaseline (£2.45, Boots).
Step 2
Apply a long-wearing lip liner to match your lipstick of choice. Rather than simply applying it to your lip line, liner gently fills in the entire lip, providing what Martin calls an “insurance” base. So even if your lipstick rubs off for some reason, the color underneath will last longer. . Huda Beauty Lip Contour 2.0 in Universal Red (£15.20, Boots) is one of her favorites on the red carpet. Mac’s Longwear Lip Liner (£16) and Rimmel’s Lasting Finish Eight Hour Lip Liner (£3.99, Boots) are also great.
Step 3
The lipstick is applied directly from the bullet, but only one layer is needed. Martin suggests applying from the cupid’s bow to the edge of the lip in one stroke, then the other side of the upper lip, and finally the lower lip in two strokes from the edge of the lip to the middle of each side. Avoid applying too much lipstick as this will only add extra “slip” to your lips.
Elson’s MatteTrace Lipstick in Pat McGrath Labs (£36, Cult Beauty) is one of Swift’s favorite reds, and Martin’s as well. Another beautiful red is Nars Power Matte Lipstick in American Girl (£26.50, Boots) and Beauty Pie’s Future Lipstick in Takeover (£10 for members, £28 for non-members).
Step 4
Gently wipe away excess lipstick with a tissue and sprinkle with translucent powder to set the lipstick. It may seem strange to apply powder on the lips, but this procedure does not affect the color and makes it last for a very long time. Mr Martin suggests using his velor puff soaked in a loose setting powder such as Veil Translucent Setting Powder (£48, Hourglass) or By Terry’s best-selling Hyaluronic Hydra Powder 8HA (£42, Lookfantastic) doing.
Apply to lips, wipe again with a tissue, and finish with a small buffing brush dampened with powder. Use the Hannah Martin That’s it! A smudge-resistant lipstick that can be used for any occasion.
