I’m very happy to say that the football chant “We are the greatest team the world has ever seen” is not being sung by Newcastle United fans.
Indeed, only fans of clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United in this country, and Real Madrid, Barcelona, Milan and Bayern Munich abroad, sing this ridiculous song with any element of belief or truth. You’ll be able to sing.
Of course, if being great means historically being a back-to-back champion, then so be it.
It’s a chant sung primarily by supporters of lower-league clubs, and it also begs the question of what truly makes a club great in the first place.
Everyone thinks their club is special to some degree, and I’m no exception.
I too sometimes get criticized for the disrespect I show toward Mackem and his team.
Also, I don’t like quite a few of the EPL’s rivals, especially Aston Villa and Everton’s Scouse Mackem.
The three clubs listed above also sing the aforementioned silly, pretentious chorus.
I never apologize for playing pop in other clubs. Because we believe that intense rivalry is an essential part of being proud of your club, its people and what the city represents.
My love for Newcastle United embodies football, history and geography.
I enjoy stories of the glories of the past, from the Edwardian era to the great 50s.
We will never forget our two immortal local heroes, from Colin Veach to War Jackie Milburn, and all the other legends who have played for us in between.
I’m also proud to be the Football League’s northernmost outpost and have a stamp in the top right hand corner of England, just 60 miles from the Scottish border.
The past 70 years have not been great for Newcastle United.
