Scientists have discovered a previously undocumented species of giant anaconda in the Amazon. They say the anaconda can grow up to 7.5 meters and weigh nearly 500 kilograms, making it the world’s largest and heaviest snake ever known.
Four species of anaconda are known to date, and the largest anaconda, the green anaconda, lives in tropical regions of South America, such as the Amazon, Orinoco, and Essequibo river basins, as well as several small watersheds.
Found in the rivers and wetlands of South America, these anacondas are well known for their lightning speed and ability to squeeze the life out of their prey by coiling around them, choking them, and swallowing them whole.
A newly published decades-long study reveals that the giant anaconda is genetically two distinct species.
Researchers working with the Waorani Indian tribe captured and studied several specimens of the newly named northern green anaconda. (Eunectes Acaima) It is located in the Bameno region of the Vaihueri Huaorani Territory in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

According to the researchers, this discovery is crucial for the conservation of anacondas, which are apex predators and essential to maintaining ecosystem balance.
A healthy anaconda population means the anaconda ecosystem is thriving with abundant food resources and clean water, but a decline in snake numbers could indicate environmental degradation. Scientists say there is.

“It is therefore critical to know which anaconda species are present and to monitor their numbers,” the researchers wrote in The Conversation.
Anacondas and their habitat are increasingly threatened by land fragmentation caused by industrialized agriculture, forest fires, drought, climate change, and heavy metal pollution associated with runoff from oil extraction activities.
“Particularly urgent is research into how petrochemicals from oil spills are affecting the fertility and reproductive biology of these rare snakes,” Dr Fry said.
