T20 World Cup, Group A (Lauderhill, Fla.)
The game was stopped without the ball being thrown.
The United States have qualified for the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup after their match against Ireland in Florida was cancelled.
Tropical storm rains and flooding occurred throughout the morning and several days later, leaving the outfield soggy and unable to dry out in time.
The match was scheduled to start at 15:30 BST with the cut-off time for the five-over match being 19:16 BST.
The match between Sri Lanka and Nepal at the same venue on Wednesday was also called off, with India scheduled to take on Canada on Saturday.
Co-hosts the United States will join India in the same group as Ireland, Canada and Pakistan, who were eliminated, to advance to the next round.
Australia, West Indies, Afghanistan and South Africa also qualified from other groups.
This is a remarkable achievement for a team ranked 18th in the world, competing in their first World Cup and only playing their first T20 international match in 2019.
They beat Canada in a close, high-scoring match in the tournament opener, shocked Pakistan in the Super Over and then played a hard-fought game against cricketing powerhouse India.
But it was a disappointing end to the tournament for Ireland, who have lost their two previous group games but still have a chance of a consolation win against Pakistan on Sunday.
Ireland cricket commentator Andrew Leonard said on Test Match Special that Ireland’s players would be “stunned” at the end of their World Cup campaign.
“I think the Irish dressing room will be the most horrible, but this is in no way indicative of the current state of Irish cricket,” he added.
“If you look at Ireland, they have performed very poorly in this tournament compared to how well they have played over the last 12-18 months. Their awful 10-over performance against Canada means Ireland’s Super 8 dreams are shattered.”
The Super 8 kicks off in the United States on Wednesday, June 19. By reaching the quarterfinals here, the USA has also qualified for the 2026 T20 World Cup, where they will face South Africa in Antigua.
