England slipped into the Super Eight at the T20 World Cup to maintain their title defence.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of England’s second round in the Caribbean, including match dates and locations, fixture schedule and format.
Who is this “Super 8” and what will happen next?
Besides England, eight teams – Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, India, South Africa, the USA and the West Indies – have qualified, divided into two groups of four teams each.
- Group 1 – India, Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh
- Group 2 – America, West Indies, South Africa, England
In the Super 8, each team will play each other team in their pool once, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals.
The winner of Group 1 will play the second placed team from Group 2 in the semi-finals and vice versa.
Which teams would advance in the Super 8 group was determined in advance to make scheduling easier.
Three teams – Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand – failed to advance to the second round after losing to the United States, Bangladesh and Afghanistan respectively.
When and where will England play?
Thursday, June 20: vs. West Indies – Gros Islet, St. Lucia (1:30 AM)
Friday, June 21: vs South Africa – Gros Islet, St. Lucia (3:30pm)
Sunday, June 23: vs USA – Bridgetown, Barbados (3:30 p.m.)
All times are UK & Ireland.
England managed to get into the Super Eight?
That was certainly true.
Scotland’s game against them in Barbados was rained out, but their opponents exploited pitching and fielding errors to lead for 90 in the 10th over, but the weather eventually took its toll, and they then lost to Australia at the same venue by 36 runs, conceding a staggering 70 in the first five overs.
Jos Buttler’s Scotland had their hopes of progressing to the next stage hanging in the balance but then dominated Oman, beating them by 47 in the semi-final and then finishing the run-chase in just 19 balls and, crucially, finishing with a better net run rate than Scotland.
They then beat Namibia in rain in Antigua on Saturday and, despite initial fears the tournament would be abandoned, won a 10-over encounter at DLS by 41 runs, before turning attention to Australia’s match against Scotland in St Lucia just hours later.
If Australia wins, England advances, otherwise they’re out.
Buttler’s side would have been nervous when Scotland led 180-5, even more so when Australia needed 89 from the final seven overs, but the 2021 champions stormed back and Travis Head (68 off 49), Marcus Stoinis (59 off 29) and Tim David (24 off 14) guided Australia to victory with two balls to go.
England overcame numerous crises to advance.
