Bangladesh are set to qualify for the Super Eights along with South Africa after beating the Netherlands by 25 runs in a crucial Twenty20 World Cup match that was delayed by rain.
Shakib Al Hasan smashed 64 as Bangladesh were bowled out for 159 after the innings. The Netherlands looked to be in control of the chase with valuable contributions from Vikram Singh, Sybrand Engelbrecht and Scott Edwards but ultimately fell short of eliminating Sri Lanka from the tournament.
Bangladesh got off to a poor start with Najmul Shanto (1) and Litton Das (1) both being dismissed early but Tanjid Hasan (35) and Shakib rallied the innings, the former chipping Paul van Meekelen to Bas de Ried to take the score to 71 for 3 after the ninth over.
Torvid Hridoy fell for nine and Mahmudullah made 24 off 20 runs to set the platform for Bangladesh to attack in the final over.
Jaquer Ali (14) and Shakib (64) added 26 runs in the final two overs to take Bangladesh to 159 at midway.
The Netherlands were slow to start their fightback but Singh built momentum and smashed three runs for 26 off 15 to leave them needing 86 with 10 overs remaining.
The Netherlands were in control when Engelbrecht (33 off 22) stepped on the gas but then he spooned Rishad Hossain to Hasan and de Lied followed up in the same over with the Netherlands still 49 runs short of the target of 160.
Edwards (25 off 23 points) was defeated by Mustafizur Rahman, ending their challenge and leaving Bangladesh second in the group behind South Africa.
What’s next?
Ireland face the USA in Florida on Friday at 3.30pm and need a win to keep their hopes of progressing from Group A alive.
If the U.S. wins or loses, the co-hosts will advance to the Super Eight along with already-qualified India and will have to beat winless Ireland, Pakistan and Canada.
