The tournament, to be held in the United States and the West Indies, is a treat for cricket fans old and new, as American audiences will become more aware of, and perhaps embrace, a game that has traditionally been met with indifference across the pond.
However, the T20 format is designed to build excitement and the matches in New York, Texas and Florida will be a great spectacle, especially if favorites India face Pakistan in the first group stage match. It should be.
This year’s tournament is divided into one round group stage with four groups of five teams each, with the top two teams qualifying for the Super 8. These two groups will each have two qualifiers to the semi-finals, with the final taking place on June 29th at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
England are the defending champions and have a big point to prove, having easily missed out on the 50-over crown in India last year.
Scotland, Ireland and Afghanistan are the dark horses poised to pull off an upset, but apart from that the usual powerhouses are in the running to win, with Australia and South Africa expected to progress.
British fans will not be accepting early start times for some late night matches to cater for local North American crowds.
