Summer McIntosh sets a new world record in the 400m individual medley. Time of 4:24:38 in 2024 Canadian Olympic Swimming Championships. McIntosh swam nearly a second and a half short of the previous world record of 4:25:87, set during the 2023 Canadian Olympic Swimming Games in Toronto last year.
This performance earned her a spot in the 400 IM for the 2024 Paris Games.
This will be McIntosh’s first time swimming the 400-meter individual medley at an Olympics. When asked about her goals for Paris, Mackintosh said: “Just to go out and have fun, the 400IM is an event that’s all about strategy and pacing in the first half, and breaststroke is my weakest stroke so I’m always trying to work on it, so I’m excited to be able to do that in Paris. I’m here.”
McIntosh thanked the audience for cheering her on. She said: “It was amazing. The audience was really excited. Hearing everyone’s voices during the breaststroke really pushed me to do my best, thank you.”
It was McIntosh’s third win at the Olympic Trials. On her first day of trials, she won the 400 meter freestyle, and the next day she also won the 200 meter freestyle.
McIntosh will compete in three events over the next three days: 100m freestyle, 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley. The seven-day event ends on Sunday, May 19th.
National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority to represent their countries at the Olympic Games, so athletes’ participation in the Paris Games depends on whether the NOC selects athletes for their delegations to the Paris 2024 Games. I am.
