A Turkish student is facing prison time for using a homemade AI device to cheat on exams. Turkish media reports say the student was caught using the device while taking the national aptitude test at a school in the southwestern province of Isparta. Reuters.

But what’s notable about this case is that someone using a homemade AI device was actually arrested, marking one of the first times that a user has faced any kind of judicial consequences for their actions.
Turkish police involved in the arrest said the homemade device was actually quite complicated, with a button camera that allowed the AI system to view the test questions, which were then passed to a voice agent on the user’s phone and transmitted to earpieces worn by the student.
The homemade AI device reportedly ran on a small modem or router placed inside the student’s shoe. A second student was also arrested in connection with the fraud, but it has not been made public the extent of his involvement or what punishment he will face.
Police say the student was arrested simply because he was acting suspiciously, which led to him being detained and searched, and the homemade device and its various parts were discovered.
