A repair and advice cafe has opened in St Andrews with the hope of teaching people how to repair their prized possessions.
The University of St Andrews Community Foundation gave permission for the cafe to host its first sessions last week. It gives people the opportunity to meet experts in different fields who can teach them how to repair their items. The project will be conducted monthly for university students, faculty, staff, and the general public, with the next session held on Valentine's Day.
The cafe aims to encourage the people of St Andrews to live more sustainably, as part of St Andrews University’s mission to reach its net zero target by 2035.
Sonya Pocewid, one of the organizers, said the group wants to tackle throwaway culture.
She said, “If we as humans on this planet are to become more sustainable, we still have a huge challenge to take care of the resources we have.
“There's definitely a need to do things differently. It's also fun because the Repair and Advice Cafe is a fun place…you get to meet new people and learn new skills.”
Project director Anya Hart-Dyke said the cafe would also be relocated to the St Andrews area.
She added: “The cafe rotates locations, so it's a chance to peek into places you've never been before and see more of your local town.”
The upcoming Repair and Advice Café will also feature a range of experts offering support on a variety of issues, including damaged mobile phones and musical instruments.
