Guwahati: Assam Police on Saturday said it has recovered several electronic devices from the cell of a National Security Act (NSA) detainee in Dibrugarh Central Jail.
Ten members of the pro-Khalistan militant group Waris Punjabi De (WPD), including leader Amritpal Singh and one of his uncles, are lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail.
They were arrested at multiple locations in Punjab during operations against disbanded groups and have been kept in jail since March 19 last year.
Police Commissioner Singh said prison officials searched the premises after receiving information about the irregularities.
Technology equipment seized during the searches included smartphones with SIM cards, keypad phones, TV remote controls with keyboards, pen drives, Bluetooth headphones, speakers and spycam pens.
Using his X handle, Singh said: “The source and mode of redirection of these unauthorized articles are under review. Further legal action is being taken and measures are being taken to prevent it from happening again.”
However, Assam’s top cop did not mention Amritpal Singh or WPD’s name in his post.
Since the Punjab militant group was incarcerated at Dibrugarh Central Jail, a multi-layered security system has been put in place, with new CCTV cameras being installed and broken CCTV cameras being repaired or replaced.
